The Cube
Backgammon advances in methods of playing the checkers and how to interpret specific moves for front and back game strategies have moved rapidly forward for some time now. The concentration and development of the best strategies for movement has emphasised how the placement of the pieces and moving of the pieces in positional play has become the focal point of the game, rather than the base element tool itself, namely the dice.
Understanding the importance of the rolls is a player's prerogative but it is often ignored, in favour of the positional move. Self sacrifice in certain dice positions soon becomes self suicide, leading to Cubular Hell.
One aspect of how this interprets in cube positional strengths is to catergorise cube movements, a practice recommended by Master Player Tak Morioka, regarded by most backgammon followers to be the top backgammon board craftsman in the world.
His definitions outline three distinct cube structures.
A. The POSITIONAL CUBE based solely on position of the pieces .Promotes consistency in the development of one's game.
B The CUSTOMIZED CUBE is directed to your opponent. Cube moves vary according to each individual's range of takes and drops. Tailoring the doubling cube can produce more effective results because the pressure of giving or not giving could change the way your opposition plays.
C. The STRATEGIC CUBE is aimed at your own match play views. It has nothing to do with understanding your opponent. Decisions are based on attaining effective match scoring results relative to your opponent.
If you can apply certain leverage to the argument of how and when you should use the doubling cube in association with these ideas of dice play, then in theory the comprehension of such a solution should mean that your game moves from a total pieces game to dice and checkers, which could make you a better player.
