Backgammon is on TV
It had to happen, with the plethora of TV channels that now proliferate around the television networks growing everyday, in particular sports channels. The demand for more sports action fuels the insatiable appetite of sports fans that just can't get enough. But where do companies go to find the next big sports show?
Satellite TV and Cable offer literally thousands of different programmes on the networks word-wide so it comes as no surprise that backgammon which is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity due to firstly its presence as an online game, and secondly its challenge to online poker, has now been taking to the television airwaves appealing to a pan-European audience on Euro sport.
The show premiered on Monday November 6th and is set to run over eight weeks. The first show went out at 23.15 CET and 22.15 in the UK.
The series is produced by The World Series of Backgammon and its spokesman Andy Bell said, 'We're confident that this series will provide exciting action, and informative programming for Europe's gaming fans. There's definitely a synergy between backgammon and other games of luck and chance; I'm certain that thousands of poker fans will join backgammon enthusiasts and tune in to watch this show."
The match-play action comes from two tournaments taking place at the De-luxe Palm Beach Casino in Cannes, with some of world's best players participating in the Riviera Cup and the Nations' Cup.
The Nations Cup is an international competition which features players in teams of two representing their countries, with group stages and a knockout phase.
The Riviera Cup is an individual competition with a winning prize of 50,000; here players battle against the clock, with only a 20 min bank time and 9 seconds per move for 13 point matches in this exhilarating 128 man tournament.
Backgammon players and spectators will be able to watch as the tournament's progress and as the excitement builds with each and every match, the pace of the games should ensure that both players and audiences are kept riveted in the comfort of their seats for the duration of the tournament.
