Should Auld Acquaintance
Second of January and just as the fizz has left the last champagne bottle and the balloons have lost their lustre and are now deflated we head into 2007 with a new and optimistic approach that this year will be better than the last.
For the online gaming world it has to be: in 2006 the industry took a colossal hit with the unlawful gaming bill, condemning US players of games of chance to an uncertain future as their favourite games were condemned to wander in illegal cyber space. Then as if that wasn’t enough games of skill were also subjected to an illegal activity ban in Israel, with backgammon, itself the national indoor sport of Israel, being judged to be unlawful.
These rumblings stirred up unrest in other countries that have yet to make final decisions as to the legality of online games in their own particular dominions.
With this legal red tape now into full swing and the introduction of a form of compliance being propagated throughout the gaming world, the future would appear to be bleak.
But every cloud has its own silver lining, and in January Party Gaming will host the first one million dollar backgammon event in the Bahamas, an event that is sure to stir media and industry professionals from their enforced cocoon of uncertainty.
Hopefully this will be the kick start that the industry needs, also in this month the International Casino Exhibition will once again be held in London during January,
This will be a focal point for gaming professionals to look at the New Year collectively, with a view to setting out strategies where working together can produce results not just for some but for all in the business.
For so long it has been a case of the have and the have nots, now it is time for the industry to work as a unit to try and find a cohesive policy that will embrace all the different facets of the gaming world and work to a common policy of what is necessary to protect and to profit.
2006 was a year where online gaming had to grow up; it had its name tainted and the industry together with its customers suffered. In 2007 the need to stabilize and to consolidate has to be the way forward. There are markets out there which will welcome the opportunity, but above all these new markets will need convincing that the industry has put its own house straight before they will open their doors to us.
2007 is going to be a big year, let’s hope it’s a Happy and Prosperous One.
